| Finally Portobuffolè, a
small Renaissance jewel, far from the busy state roads, enclosed in the silence
of its alleys and porticoes. It is one of the most beautiful and amazing spots in the
whole province, and most definitely worth a visit.
Portobuffolè Porta Friuli It is worth mentioning Gaia da Camino's House (with a beautiful set of frescoes inside), the Piazza Maggiore (where until the 1800s the inhabitants used to have a bull hunt like in Venice), the Palazzetto del Monte di Pietà, the Town Tower, the Loggia, the Cathedral (once a jewish synagogue, with a painting by Francesco da Milano), the Torresin Tower and the late 1600s Villa Giustiniani. In the district there are other important sights which are worth visiting: Villa Zeno in Cessalto, a jewel by Andrea Palladio, the 1575 Villa Emo Capodilista in Magnadola, Villa Tiepolo in Fontanelle and Villa Toderini in Codognè (these two along the road from Oderzo to Conegliano), and Villa Papadopoli in S.Polo di PIave, built in 1861 in eccentric gothic style. Inside the villa there is a remarkable English style garden with a lake, woods, embankments and extremely interesting visual effects. Also in S.Polo, in the neighbourhood of S.Giorgio, there is the omonimous church, of longobard age and later enlarged until the 17th century. There is a rich set of frescoes inside. If you continue towards Ormelle, in the neighbourhood of Tempio, you will see a 12-13th century church, which was probably built by the Templar Knights. A fascinating gallery along the façade and one of the sides gives it an unusual character .
Roncade Villa Castello Giustinian The Opitergino also offers the visitor interesting natural sights: the ancient woods of Olné in Cessalto and of the Cavalier near Chiarano and, in the borough of Mansué, the Pra dei Gai, an extent of fields along the banks of the river Livenza. |
Near Chiarano and in Piavon
di Oderzo you can still see some thatched 'casoni', typical of the archaic rural
architecture. The Road of the Red Wines winds through luxuriant cultivations, which indicate a flourishing agriculture. The many traditional 'osterie', restaurants and wine tasting bars lure you to stop and taste the world famous Cabernet, Merlot, Raboso del Piave, Pinot and Chardonnay. Once over the river Piave, in Ponte di Piave, it is worth stopping in Fagarè to see the great Military Monument. Nearby, in Monastier, you can see the ruins of a 10th century Benedictine Monastery. Not far from there in Roncade, there is Villa-Castello Giustinian, today Ciani-Bassetti, a beautiful example of 15th century pre-Palladian villa. It lies within a fortified enclosure, surrounded by a
