| The land between the
rivers Piave and Livenza, rich in rivers and streams, has an unusual landscape
for this region, with vast cuultivations which are rarely seen elsewhere in the area.
Oderzo scorcio sul Monticanno Here there are some precious vineyards (the Road of the Red Wine or PIave Wine crosses it), and there are also many examples of ancient woods. Oderzo is the most important town of the area. It has ancient paleo-veneti origins and during the Roman Empire it was a very important borough. The Museo Opitergino, with its remarkable archeologic collection, witnesses this ancient splendour through some altars and funerary tabernacles, monuments, inscriptions and the famous Hunt mosaics, seven pieces of a mosaic floor that date back to the 4th century. |
The town lies around Piazza
Vittorio Emanuele II, where there are the main monuments: the Cathedral, a gothic building
that was renovated in the 1400s, with works by Pomponio Amalteo and a painting by Palma
the Young which depicts the descent of the Holy Ghost; the ancient Town Gallery, the
Torresin tower and Ottoboni Palace with its outside frescoes.
Oderzo Corso Umberto I The town has an unusual lay-out, with old streets bordered by porticoes and palaces, along rivers and canals, or picturesque mazes of alleys which are called Contrade (Contrada Rossa, Contrada del Cristo). The high street is called Corso Umberto I, with 1400s and 1500s houses and palaces, often with frescoed façades. The Pinacoteca Martini is also worth a visit. |
