| Before getting to Asolo
It is compulsory to stop at Maser to visit Villa Barbaro 41560), one of Palladio's
greatest masterpieces.
Maser Villa Barbaro 1560 Inside it there are the famous Paolo Veronese's frescoes, and behind it there is an annexed Museum of ancient coaches. It is also worth mentioning the Villa's little church, also by Palladio, a genial re-invention of the classic Pantheon.
From Maser you can reach Asolo through the Forcella Mostaccin (mountain saddle), over incomparable hill landcsape. Asolo is an extraordinary historical town, of paleo-veneti origin which greatly developed in Roman times. It is mentioned by Plinius as one of the first fortified towns (oppidum) in the 10th region. Its present aspect dates back to the Renaissance; an unequalled compendium of culture, art and landscape. |
Among its famous
dwellers were Eleonora Duse, Browning, the writer Luigi Malipiero and the English
traveller Freja Stark, in whose garden the remains of a Roman theatre were found.
Also beautiful are the Eleonora Duse's palace, the so-called Longobard House ( 16th century) and the central Piazza Maggiore, where there is a fountain fed by the Roman Aqueduct and the scenographic façade of Villa Pasini. It is possible to visit the gallery of the Roman aqueduct. It is also interesting to see the remains of the frescoes which used to decorate all the façades. Asolo was in fact, like Treviso, a painted town. The surroundings are also beautiful, both for the pleasantness of the hills and the beauty of tha villages like Pagnano, where there is a very interesting 15th century drop-hammer, Monfumo, which lies at the feet of a little white church; or Castelcies, where there is the extremely ancient S.Martino oratory. |
